Piracy for the People

Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit, recently posted on Twitter that a medical equipment manufacturer, Steris, sent a “threatening letter” to him demanding that iFixit remove the documentation regarding how to repair their equipment that iFixit currently hosts.

Normally, I’d think this company was being douchey but would side with them because it is their intellectual property and protected by copyright laws.

However, things right now are anything but normal! We are in the middle of a pandemic and people are dying. The ability for hospital staff to be able to repair important medical equipment can mean the difference between life and death for countless people.

By demanding that this documentation no longer be available, Steris is effectively threatening the lives of people to protect their profits. That is absolutely unacceptable and I fully support iFixit, and anybody else, in keeping all of this content hosted for free for as long as possible.
