Audacity Microphone Fix in MacOS Catalina

Hey! I’m back with another quick and dirty tech tip, this time for Audacity in MacOS 10.15, aka “Catalina.” Currently, the powerful audio editor is officially incompatible with Catalina because it isn’t allowed permission to access the microphone. The Audacity team has addressed this in a recent blog post and provided this same workaround there as well.

The workaround is to simply launch Audacity via Terminal and allow Terminal to access the microphone when prompted. You may have to go into System Preferences > Privacy & Security > Privacy > Microphone to do this.

The command to launch Audacity from Terminal is:

/Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity;

I have personally verified that this issue persists and the workaround still works as of April 17, 2020, running:
• Audacity 2.3.3
• MacOS 10.15.4

Hopefully you found this helpful! As always, if you have any questions or feedback, leave a comment. Also, please consider giving the video a thumbs up and subscribing to my YouTube channel and this blog for more helpful content!
